“Graduation” – Discussion on Sunday, May 2
An earnest doctor, disgusted by corruption in post-Communist Romania, resolves that his daughter will escape to a better life via a scholarship to a British university. Events threaten to derail his dreams for her, resulting in ethical dilemmas and painful choices for his whole family. Ann Hornaday of the Washington Post writes that the film “engages issues of ethics, globalism, civil society, personal morality and the agony of parental separation within a genre that might be dubbed a socio-philosophical thriller.” It sounds as if we’ll have plenty to discuss! Directed by Cristian Mungiu, 2016, Romania, 128 minutes, Romanian with subtitles.
