Lake Committee

The Lake Committee is responsible for maintaining Maple Lake as a recreational resource for Town residents. The many tasks associated with keeping the lake clean, healthy, and safe are managed by the dedicated members of this all-volunteer committee.

The Lake Committee is active year-round:

  • In Winter, if the lake freezes, the committee issues recommendations on whether it is safe for skating. Starting in January, the committee arranges for control and management of the Canada geese, algae and pondweed.
  • In Spring, the committee arranges for any repairs to be made to the dock, the shed, fencing and gates, the security system, the bridge to the island, and any other items that need upkeep.
  • In April, the committee stages a “Lake Clean-Up” day where Town residents gather with rakes and wheelbarrows to clean any trash and dead leaves from the partially-drained lake, and to spread sand on the beach if a new delivery has been made.  The committee also hires the life guards and swim instructor. A roster of “Lake Volunteers” who will open and close the lake gate daily is set up, and a person is identified to take responsibility for issuing party permits.
  • When the lake opens in June, the committee arranges to put up the diving board, monitor the water quality, monitor and manage life guards, and any security items that come up. The committee also helps manage the swim lessons during July.
  • At the end of the season, the committee has a party, and put away the diving board, beach toys and clean up for the winter.
