Remarks » 1940s alterations: bay window, which lies across the property line, second story enclosed for bedroom and bath. Pughes enclosed porch for bedroom with bath & utility room in rear. Original cottage still rests on original cedar post foundations. Sunken patio is built on foundations of former neighboring cottage. Garage removed 1987. Called Sunset Cottage by Dr. Woodman for the view from front porch. Lucy Salamanca wrote Fortress of Freedom, a history of the Library of Congress. George Pughe was second mayor of Washington Grove (1957-1961 & 1963-1969). He was Chief of the Air & Space Division of Library of Congress, retired 1969. He died 8-6-1995. Jane Pughe taught piano lessons to children in her house, and was a piano accompaniest with the Town Chorus for many years.
