Town Meeting at a Glance
At the 68th Annual Town Meeting the FY2005 budget was adopted by unanimous vote. The property tax rate will remain the same as last year at $0.217/$100 assessed valuation. This will produce approximately $10,000 in additional revenue over last year due to the rise in assessed valuation. The Mayor and Council determined that this additional revenue is necessary because of dramatic shortfalls in other income sources compounded by the effect of inflation over the last ten years. The dwelling unit charge is proposed to remain the same as last year at $125/dwelling. This charge is directly tied to the cost of refuse and recycling collection.

Building Permits:
If you are going to erect a building or structure (including fences), make structural alterations to, or move any existing building or other structure, you must first obtain a building permit from the Washington Grove Planning Commission. The Town zoning ordinance governs setbacks, lot coverage and height. Applications are available at the Town Office at 301-926-2256. The permit fee is $10.00, payable to the Town of Washington Grove. Interior renovations, which involve electrical, plumbing, or load-bearing changes, generally require a County permit. A shed requires a County permit as well. The Town must first sign off all applications for County-required building permits. The Historic Preservation Commission will review most permits as well.
Building Permits were issued for the following:

Maple Lake News
Maple Lake is now open for daily use through Labor Day weekend. Lifeguards will be on duty from noon until 6:00 p.m.. Permits are required. Residents may pick up lake permits at the Town Office during regular office hours.
Lake users – We would like to improve the access to the lake for town residents, and communication about the lake with regard to the combination lock.
When the combination is changed, we will notify the committee members via e-mail with the new number, and post a note on the yahoo group that the number has been changed (but not the number itself.) Call a committee member (or the town clerk – Kathy Lehman 301 926 2256) to get the new number.
It is very important to keep the lock closed and tumblers turned, and a chain has been attached to keep the lock from wandering off. A new lock has been provided with a longer neck, so it is easier to use.
Here is a list of Lake Committee members and others to call if you have questions:
John Hutchinson [email protected], Chair Person
Tom Land [email protected], Town Councilor for the lake
Eric Selby [email protected]
Bulk Trash Pickup Scheduled
A bulk trash pickup is scheduled for July 24, 2004. Collection may include furniture, appliances (not those with freon), rugs, large toys, small auto parts etc. Materials MAY NOT include construction by-products, large auto parts, or tires. Please place items “curbside” by 7:00 a.m..
Arts & Crafts Show Interest Sought
It’s no secret that this Town is full of artists and craftspeople. Some folks are interested in asking the Recreation Committee for sponsorship of a show (NOT A SALE) in McCathran Hall. To express your interest, please call Doris Gordon at 301-926-8603.
Recycling Reminder
Our Post Office does not recycle any of that pesky junk mail that you never asked for and, therefore, throw in their trash cans. If you care about recycling, please take your personal junk mail home and let Waste Management take it away. Just a reminder; newspapers, magazines, catalogs, phone books, office & computer paper, newspaper inserts, unwanted mail and paperback books are ALL recyclable.
Brush Pickup Reminder
As a courtesy to Town residents, the Town maintenance staff has always picked up brush piles, reasonable in size, when placed “curbside”. So, what’s reasonable in size mean? Piles that are the size of a small pickup truck would be considered unreasonable in size. Do you get our point? Recyclable yard waste is a service that we pay for in our Waste Management contract. There are a few “conditions”;
Put waste in a big, brown paper yard waste bag or a trash can with a “YARD WASTE” label.
Bundle brush trimmings, not to exceed 4 inches in diameter or 4 feet in length, and tie it securely. Bundles may not be larger than 30 inches in diameter.
If you use a lawn service or landscape contractor, please make sure that they understand that removal of large amounts of yard waste is their responsibility.
McCathran Hall Scheduler Wanted
Eight days and counting for, Jenny Long, our current McCathran Hall scheduler. The Town is looking for someone to fill this paying position. Responsibilities include: handling inquiries about availability; showing the facility to potential renters; maintaining the calendar for hall rental and handling rental agreements, deposits and payments. Interested persons should call the Town Office at 301-926-2256.
Clerk’s Corner
Someone once asked me how in the heck we navigated the narrow roads in this Town. I answered, “slowly, with care and with courtesy”.
