Councilor David Stopak and Councilor Georgette Cole took the oath of office.

Correction: The Notice of Public Hearing distributed at the Town Meeting was incorrect. The subject of the July 11th Public Hearing will be a new schedule of fees (see below).

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING

The Washington Grove Town Council will hold a public hearing on Monday, July 11, 2005, 7:30 p.m., in McCathran Hall, 300 Grove Avenue, Washington Grove, Maryland. The purpose of the hearing will be to take public comment regarding the collection of fees for various applications, permits and petitions. The proposed ordinance will codify the authority of the Town pursuant to State law and the Town Charter to collect fees for various applications, requests and petitions. Copies of the proposed ordinance will be available in the Town Office, 300 Grove Ave., Washington Grove, Maryland.

Town Meeting at a Glance

At the 69th Annual Town Meeting the FY2006 budget was adopted by unanimous vote. The tax rate will be lowered to the constant yield rate of .202/$100 assessed valuation remain. The dwelling unit charge will remain the same as last year at $125/dwelling.

And the winner is…Shelley Winkler!

In Washington Grove, so many volunteer much time and special effort to make good things happen. Now and then, however, the Town especially needs individuals to make extraordinary efforts on our behalf. The Mayor’s Distinguished Service Award was conceived as an opportunity for the Mayor to bring to everyone’s attention an individual effort that has been a particularly valuable recent contribution to Washington Grove.

Indeed, creation of this kind of recognition award was a virtual necessity after Shelley’s recent efforts on behalf of the Town. These include numerous appearances at the PHED committee of the County Council in defense of the Legacy Open Space field and in support of the other community facilities proposed in the Shady Grove Metro Center Master Plan, and hours spent working with other civic groups and County staff. And this follows after sustained efforts of the past 4 years in preserving the Casey Field. In no small way, Shelley Winkler is an inspiration to all of us to rise to the occasion when need calls, and to never doubt that the Town of Washington Grove will recognize your extraordinary commitment and efforts.

Deer Park Bridge

On Thursday, July 14th, the Montgomery County Planning Board has scheduled a hearing and work session on the Humpback Bridge during its regular agenda to evaluate it for designation on the Montgomery County’s Master Plan for Historic Preservation. Please mark your calendars and come to this important session to show your support for preserving the bridge. The hearing will be held at the Montgomery Regional Auditorium at 8787 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring. Further information about the approximate time of the hearing, testifying and about sending comments will come along shortly. Building Permits

If you are going to erect a building or structure (including fences), make structural alterations to, or move any existing building or other structure, you must first obtain a building permit from the Washington Grove Planning Commission. The Town zoning ordinance governs setbacks, lot coverage and height. Applications are available at the Town Office at 301-926-2256. The permit fee is $10.00, payable to the Town of Washington Grove. Interior renovations, which involve electrical, plumbing, or load-bearing changes, generally require a County permit. A shed requires a County permit as well. The Town must first sign off all applications for County-required building permits. The Historic Preservation Commission will review most permits as well.

Neighborhood Watch News

Betsy Klinger called a meeting of the Neighborhood Watch Block Captains on June 13, 2005. Coordinator Chris Kirtz had the pleasure of passing his green WGNW cap along to Leigh Partington and Keith Gillis who will carry on his leadership. The Watch program owes a lot to Chris for stepping forward 2 years ago to help the program get off the ground and, as coordinator, assuming the work and worry of keeping it aloft. We now have 25 block captains covering 23 blocks, including 6 new block captains. The block captains were given materials to distribute to the residents of their blocks. They will be visiting each house in their block to introduce themselves and to distribute important Neighborhood Watch information in the coming weeks.

Summer In The Parks

S.I.T.P. begins on July 6, 2005. Please remember these three things daily;

Apply sun-block to your child.
Send a water bottle with your child.
Send a snack with your child.
Popsicles will be provided each day but snacks will not be provided this year. Parents, please make sure to check the sign-up sheets that will be posted on the first day of camp. We need volunteers for a number of activities and tasks. All parents are expected to contribute to the program in some way. Our volunteer efforts help keep the program affordable and accessible. They are essential to the success of the program.

The following items are needed for camp:

Beautiful Junk (to include): toilet paper & paper towel tubes, bubble wrap, cereal boxes, and other smaller boxes.
Things we need only a few of (but you won’t get back): puzzles with all the pieces, board games in good shape (quick playing are best), decks of cards, pretty material for quilting, roll of paper, scrap wood (small pieces); paper tape measures.
Things we need to BORROW for the summer: hammers, goggles, old clothes, TV with VCR.
Parent volunteers needed to help with: Quilting project over 3 days; Tile wall project (must be willing to get messy).

Rabid Raccoon Found

A raccoon was trapped and removed from the 300 block of Chestnut Avenue over Memorial Day weekend. State tests came back and the raccoon tested positive for rabies. If you see a raccoon out during the day, be suspicious and keep your pets inside. By all means, please, vaccinate your pets!

Dog Dew Reminder

Your dog’s “dew” is your responsibility. Whether on public or private land, please clean up after your dogs. Stepping in “it” is so unpleasant, remember?
